Dear co-laborers in Christ,

Today is the birthday (February 12, 1809) of President Abraham Lincoln.  In these troubled times, one could do far worse than to revisit Steven Spielberg’s 2012 movie “Lincoln” starring Daniel Day Lewis and focusing on the final four months of Lincoln’s presidency as he pushes for the passage of the 13thAmendment to abolish slavery.  More ambitious folks may wish to read (or reread) Doris Kearns Goodwin’s 2005 award-winning 944-page book, Team of Rivals, on which the “Lincoln” movie was based.  Either way, with the sitting U.S. President posting a video (now removed) on the White House website depicting the first Black U.S. President and his family as apes, it is more urgent than ever for people of faith to espouse commitment to both the Christian value of every human being as a child of God, and the American credo of “e pluribus unum” (out of many, one people.)
